Description:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-91) is synonymous with Viennese classicism. This work is part of a set of the last three symphonies Mozart wrote in 1788 when was 32. The other two are symphony number 40 and symphony number 41. Symphony number 39, notwithstanding its significance, is the least performed - or discussed - of the final three symphonies.
Backstory:
The Holy Roman Empire - of which Vienna was the capital - declared war on Turkey in 1788. Mozart went on composing undeterred. He was, in fact, financially broke. Three days before he completed K. 543 he lost his only daughter. Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven were all composing in Vienna between 1750-1825.
