-Brian Mendonca
Two bodies lie
floating in the Chambal
One of 18
One yet to be born.
Of a star-crossed love
They were mute witnesses.
A tragedy in time
waiting to unfold.
From Delhi they came
for succour to Agra
A father with his daughter
and his bhanja.
They took her to Chambal
asked her to jump
When she refused
they held her down.
Asking forgiveness
Is like the tears of the gharial.
You preserved your 'honour'
but at what cost?
The waters of
Madhya Pradesh
Rajasthan and UP
caress them as divers
search for their bodies.
Receive them O river
As you sweep by unmoved
Denied as they were
Khushi in this life.

Note
A father drowned his 18-year-old daughter Khushi in the Chambal river, with the help of his son-in-law, at Basoni, in Agra on 30 July 2026. He feared social criticism because she was pregnant and unmarried.
The Chambal river is famous for its riverine life, in particular the gharial, which is a type of crocodile.
