| A family buys onions at the Wednesday market. |
The weekly market in Kharghar, Sector 10, has fresh fruit and vegetables. People from the bastis come to buy what they need.
The scene above struck me as the family of four are visible in the frame. Their faces seem creased with worry. They seem to be deciding what quantity to buy - or how much they can afford.
The makeshift lighting with a bulb illuminates the space. Some onions are small, some spoilt. The peels are neatly arranged to the left.
Around the family hi-rises reach for the sky. The open maidan is a refuge for those with meagre means. The rates are lower. Ferried in a tempo The onions are sold at the wholesale rate.
At the end of the day, everyone needs onions.
I pick up a few from a provision store on my way home. As I show a fistful of onions (about four), and a few chillies, the shopkeeper looks dubiously at me. 'Give what you want. 8 or 10 rupees.'
I pay him 10 rupees and ask if I can pick up another onion on the way out. He nods vigorously.
