From Gaza to the Godavari

Dr. Brian Mendonca being felicitated on National Science Day.

-Brian Mendonca

It was a great moment today when the research ideas I came up with during AY 2025-26 were recognized and applauded at a function in college on National Science Day. The event titled Research Conclave 2026 was curated by the Research Development Cell of  Carmel College, Goa helmed by RDC Coordinator Manjunath Nayak.

The output was possible because of the intellectual ethos Carmel College provides. Its serene campus, its peaceful library with a browsing centre, and friendly staff, have made it conducive to think out of the box. Add to that a vibrant network of academicians in the literary field in Goa who are truly interested in providing avenues for research, and the only thing that remains is the motivation to write that paper.

It is vital to present one's work at conferences and seminars to stay relevant. All the papers below have been presented at seminars before being published, after whetting.

When you are writing the paper you are in that space where it is more of a frenzy. You need to cull out time from your college duties, and your responsibilities to your students. You want to give up at times. Preparing the PPT takes time - which is often hard to come by. Often I have been compelled to work on the PPT on the day of the seminar itself while the plenaries are on. It's worth it, because you know your subject better.

What helped me a lot is reading and being up to date on the issues in current affairs. Reflecting on my teaching practice helped me to put out my paper on blogging. I have been blogging at www.lastbustovasco.blogspot.com since 2008, but today it has a veneer of respectability - as an expression of digital humanities. One blog I wrote on Bama's Sangati for my students of Dalit Literature had over 648 views when I checked last.

It is also important to nurture and develop research interests. It is nice to be versatile in publishing,

The Research Conclave gave value to my work. Sharing the work published over the last academic year below.
