You won't get
the smell of death
for the 7 a.m. Mass.
No incense, no flowers
No stab of departure.
Devotees file in
and take their places.
Dawn peeps
out of the clouds.
On the street
the lamps still glow.
In the church
Only half the chandeliers
are lit.
Seniors with sticks
Women with cowls
families in tow
It's a first Friday Mass.
The three priests enter
Green for ordinary time
The dog sleeps at the altar.
