Beef, parotta, chicken curry and veg thalis. |
It was a novel experience eating white rice with sambhar for lunch today at Mallu Republic at around 2 p.m.
As we strolled in to find a table waiting for us, the person at the counter bounced over to inform us that the boiled rice had just got over but they had just cooked the other rice.
I opted for a veg Kerala thali (₹120) being easier to digest in the summer heat. It came with rice, sambhar, fried Kerala chilly, mango pickle, papadam, toran (vegetable), rasam, and pineapple pachadi and sevian for dessert. For sides we took Kerala chicken curry, and beef roast - which Dwayne devoured with his Malabar parottas.
We recalled the time in Delhi when we used to go to the Kerala restaurant in Kalkaji on Saturdays and have beef with parotta. I remembered George who used to always serve us Kerala food in Delhi. It's curious how specific types of food evoke special memories of special people.
I loved the steel thalis and vatis. The serving was light and balanced and easy to digest. We ordered an extra rice to go with the side dishes.
It was very economical as well. The service was very good too.
