Segundo Bairro

Delicious Goan fare.

Facade of Segundo Bairro

- Brian Mendonca

Today being Easter, we decided to try out a new place. Segundo Bairro perched at Dona Paula seemed a good option.

What attracted us was the Goan dishes and the home-made food. The sorpotel did not disappoint. Had with Goan poee the warmth found its way to our stomach.

The Choriz pulao (₹333) was well done with each grain of rice having its texture. Dwayne was swept away by the beef chilli burger and he munched it hungrily with batatas fritas on the side.

Soaking in the moment I called for a pint of Budweiser beer. Priced at ₹130, it snaked its way down my throat helped along by the mean masala peanuts which was not on the menu - but specially made in request.

Dwayne went in for a chocolate mousse for dessert. Served in a tiny reusable glass bottle Dwayne wondered if he could take it home. But that was not to be.

I was fascinated by the paintings in the interiors - all done by Goan artists. There was a detail of Van Gogh's sunflowers by Clarice Vaz from Saligao. There was a life-like painting of the inside of an actual bar in St. Estavam with the figures based on the people who visited the bar.

All the while some great music was playing like Abba, Neil Diamond, Kenny Rogers, and Cliff Richard's 'She was afraid to come out of the water. '

To reach Segundo Bairro, one needs to take the lane opposite the entrance to Cidade de Goa and turn right at the second intersection. There is parking outside the building. The AC restaurant is on the ground floor with three steps at the entrance. Segundo Bairro also has basic rooms to let.

We enjoyed the ambience, the efficient and friendly service and the reasonable pricing.  It's great to go exploring on a weekend and discover such delectable Goan cuisine at so affordable a price.
