Ask what I shall give you

God speaks to Solomon in a dream.

-Brian Mendonca

In today's reading God speaks to Solomon in a dream and says, 'Ask what I shall give you. ' (1 Kings 3: 4-13)

Asking implies that the person who is asked may give what is being asked or refuse. However, God banishes all doubt and says it is in his power to give. One only has to ask.

Many times we live in doubt and fear of ourselves. We feel we are not capable of achieving something - even if we deserve it. We forget that God is well-aware of our potential and capabilities - even if we are not.

If God wants to give you a gift, he will give it to you no matter what. Herculean tasks are made simple - sometimes embarrassingly so. Shelved projects come alive once more.

King Solomon (1010 BCE- 931 BCE) was the son of David and Bathsheba. He asks for wisdom, to rule over the United Kingdom of Israel which he did from 970 BCE - 931 BCE. i. e. a period of 40 years. He was the first to build God's temple in Jerusalem.

Later in life Solomon took the king of Egypt, Pharaoh's daughter as his wife and walked away from God's teaching. The famed temple was sacked by the Babylonians in 586 BCE.

His dissolute life is reviled by Chaucer's wife of Bath in the poetic work by the same name. But it also birthed some of the most lyrical love poetry in the Song of Solomon in the Bible.
