There will be nothing to look forward to in the new year for Ziyan Fernandes and her daughter as they mourn the passing of their father. 

On the night of 29th December they saw him stabbed to death. He had objected to a smoker puffing in the daughter's face in a public place. 

This was in the upmarket locality of Chapel Road, Bandra, Mumbai. 

The incident is a wry comment on the times we live in, where people trespassing on the rights of others, kill with impunity when confronted. 

Joseph and his family were unarmed. The smoker called his friends who thrashed Joseph. Then he brandished a knife and stabbed Joseph several times.
