Goan films at IFFI 2023

Still from Peace Lily Sand Castle

-Brian Mendonca

In a rare treat today, ESG re-screened three films which were included in the Goan Section for the 54th edition of IFFI in 2023.  Screened in Audi 1 in the spacious Maquinez Palace, it felt good to see the cast speaking in Konkani on themes dear to Goans.

Each film was unique in its own way. In The Witness, the man harbours a secret.  Peace Lily Sand Castle explores the relationship between two women who share the same man. #MOG is about love between a couple and the challenges along the way.

The Witness dwells on the aspect of guilt. What does one do when a spouse learns of a dark secret of her husband? The opening scene of the villagers in boats looking for Juze in the river is full of suspense. Women and men see crime differently. The story which centres around a poder reminded me of Aiz Mhaka, Faleam Tuka which is also about a baker who is bewitched.

Can an ex-wife and the current wife get along? Seems difficult. But that is exactly what happens in Peace Lily Sand Castle. The women show empathy towards each other and even help each other.

#MOG received a good response. The story is cleverly told. The visuals taken by a drone camera. are quite stunning. All the films show the pristine beauty of Goa.

Domestic helps play a crucial part in a family's well-being. Yashoda is a story about one such. The help confides in Asavari, the lady she works for, about a proposal she has received. Asavari advises her to take care during her confinement, but fate intervenes. Asavari adopts the unborn child and names it after the maid's wishes.

Life changes people. The relationship between two brothers is developed in Gathan. When the younger brother's son says he will visit the village, the older brother goes out of the way to welcome him. But things are not the same.
