Abstract
The Konkani films showcased at the International Film Festival of Goa
(IFFI) in 2022 provide a valuable glimpse into the Goan psyche. Seven Konkani
non-feature films were screened at the festival. They include Ardo Dis, Before
I Sleep, The White Shirt, Wind Chimes, The White Dream,
Goy Swantryachey Homkhan, and Nimnya Disak. Non-feature films
have a documentary-like quality in treating the subject. They are rooted in the
ethos of a community.
The short film Wagro (Place of Sacrifice) was included in the
Indian Panorama section. The movie shot in Surla, Sankhali travelled to the
Cannes film festival before it was shown in Goa. The rural ethos which
permeates the film foregrounds the leafy villages of Goa as the site for
resurgence in the face of the rampant destruction of nature in the name of
development.
All these films reveal a Goa that is seldom seen. They peel off the soul
of Goa and articulate the deepest of Goan aspirations. That they are not
recognized, is a tragedy, now particularly to a generation weaned on OTT fare.
An analysis of the Goan films screened at IFFI 2022 merits serious study for
the questions they raise about the endurance of Goan asmitai.
