Carols and the homeless

Homeless prepare for a night on the pavement.

 -Brian Mendonca

We had just finished serenading on the steps to Panjim church. As I walked to my car on the kerb next to Kamat restaurant - opposite Dominos - I noticed a few homeless who had settled down for the night. They were sleeping and it was not yet 8 p.m. Perhaps there was nothing for them to stay awake for.

The first group was a family with a man, woman and a girl child. The woman was sleeping with the child. The man slept next to them leaning his head on a white sack. Maybe they were rag pickers. They seemed to be exhausted.

In front of my car were a couple (See top) . The man had gone to sleep. The woman was trying to drink some water from a plastic bottle.

I wondered if they had eaten.

International day of the homeless went by last week. Every night the migrant population of Panjim looks for places to spend the night. There are even more these days on account of Christmas and New Year. The homeless who are younger sell Santa caps and costumes.

The world - and Goa - forgot them as they raced home to watch the World Cup football finals which began at 8.30 p.m.
