Today I thought of sharing pix of my morning walk. These past few days it has been my wont to rise before 6 a.m. and take a walk to get the newspapers. I leave at 6.30 and am back for breakfast in an hour. Today was my third walk ever since we took residence in a serviced apartment in Nungumbakkam, Chennai.
The route is the same, emerging as I do from 4th Cross street, Sterling Road from the lane serving Darjeeling Tea. I first walk past AICUF House (1) where I came when I was a student in St. Xavier's college, Goa. AICUF was very active then but does not seem to have much presence now. Maybe I shall step in and say 'hello.'
The lady who seems to be intervening and telling the warriors to stop (Pic. 2) is intriguing. I must find out more about them. Which incident does it commemorate?
The Dindigul Dragons (3) exhort your support as they tower over me as I wall past. The outfit represents the team from Dindigul, Tamil Nadu which featured in the Twenty 20 cricket tournament.
As you turn the corner to the right you come upon Mahalingam street on Tank bund road. In the distance you can make out the tall spire of St. Thomas cathedral which we visited yesterday. (Pic. 4)
Being Diwali today, kids were up early. Here one boy seemed determined to light a firecracker in front of a saddle of nuns who seemed to be returning after a morning service. (Pic. 5) Thankfully he waited till after they passed.
Movies are advertised on hoardings at bus stands. (Pics 6 & 7) They help to keep the actors actresses alive in the popular imagination. I want to see a Tamil film in Chennai as is my wont when I visit a new place - I like to see a film in the local language. Just to see if I can understand the film through gestures alone!
Just before you hit the main road at the T junction up ahead under the flyover you chance across a quaint side street called '40 Foot Street' (Pic. 8)
I usually have an idli at Gayathri restaurant here but it was closed today. Must ask Ravi, the owner in a mundu about it next time. I was also denied my filter coffee at Sarvana's cart near Pic. 4 today. But I came back happily with my newspapers - which I have not read till now!
