| The Israelites are defeated by the Philistines |

In today's reading the Israelite army is defeated by the Philistines. Twice. After the first rout they ask God why He has abandoned them. They then hasten to bring the ark of the Covenant from Shiloh. The bringing of the ark causes the Israelites to raise a mighty shout. This at first deters their foes, but eventually the Philistines prevail for the second time.
Even the psalmist cries out, 'Redeem us Lord with your merciful love.' (Ps. 44)
