Stan(d) Alone

Funeral announcement by priests of the Society of Jesus

-Brian Mendonça

Stand alone
Coz no one will
To root for justice
Is a bitter pill.

You stood unmoved
Till the very end
Your frail bark
Refusing to bend.

His brothers found Joseph
A tad too inconvenient
They threw him in a well
For travellers itinerant.

The caravan moves on
Through dust, through coal
Land rights and equity
Don’t make for polity.

'A priest forever'
You reached out to the voiceless
The dispossessed, the homeless
The weft of the nation.

Your values we cherish
Of what good is silence
For a moment, a caesura
When we must all perish?

You played this game
Whatever the cost
Only the innocent
Know what they have lost.
