Cyclone Tauktae

 -Brian Mendonca

Curtains like whiplashes
smirk in malevolence,
Cyclone Tauktae
races to the sea.

Overland, westward
Northbound, East-Central
160 kms per hour
scourge of the tropics.

Ravaging Thiruvananthapuram
Malnad and Margao
Rain clouds in battle array -
chariots of doom.

Potted plants cower
in domestic bliss
As Asoka trees
tilt precariously.

Doors come unfastened
rafters dislodged.
Unheard noises
crash all around.

Landfall at Diu
solar panels asunder
The tau touches Abu
on the heels of Nisarga.

Named by Myanmar
the lizard arches
The eerie 'Oo-wooo-wooo'
precedes its coming.
