Witold Lutoslawski (1913-1994) was a Polish composer. He was born in Warsaw and studied piano music before the Nazis invaded in 1939. He was captured and was asked to operate a military radio station in Krakow. He escaped. During the Nazi occupation of Poland, Lutoslawski moonlighted by playing jazz and Polish folk music incognito at cafes. However, he kept his ‘serious’ music alive.
According to Lutoslawski the principal movements of the Partita are the first (Allegro giusto); the third (Largo) and the fifth (Presto). The second and fourth are interludes.
Lutoslawski developed harmony based on the 12 notes of the chromatic scale. His music recalls Stravinsky. A partita is a suite for solo instrument or chamber music.
