Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) was a French composer. His music bridges Romanticism and ushers in modernism in French music. He studied under Saint-Saens. He wrote a number of orchestral works like Pavane, nocturnes and piano quartets. He is remembered for his Requiem. In the last 20 years of his life he suffered from increasing deafness.

Pelleas and Melisande is based on a play by Maurice Maeterlinck by the same name.  It is about the forbidden love between Pelleas and Melisande. It was composed for a London production. The first movement is from the prelude to Act I. Golaud’s hunting horn is heard towards the end. The second movement is from the prelude to Act III. Melisande is at the spinning wheel. The third movement is from the prelude to Act II. Melisande drops her wedding ring into the well. The last movement is the prelude to the last act when Melisande dies.

Pelleas and Melisande was also made into an opera in five acts by Debussy.
