Ravel

Piano Concerto in G

Movements

1.     Allegramente

2.     Allegro Assai

3.     Presto

Composed: 1929-31

Duration: 23 mins. (approx.)

Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), in his time, was France’s greatest living composer. Ravel said that his new work was “a concerto in the truest sense of the word: I mean that it is written very much in the same spirit as those of Mozart and Saint-Saëns. The music of a concerto should, in my opinion, be lighthearted and brilliant, and not aim at profundity or at dramatic effects.” This composition was Ravel’s farewell - one of his final completed works. He was no longer able to compose after that. He served in World War I at the front as a truck driver in 1917. Alluding to Ravel’s Swiss descent Stravinsky compared his music as being one by ‘the most perfect of Swiss watchmakers.’
