Dwayne's birthday 2021

Dwayne has a blast with his friends.

Dwayne's birthday on 14th January is always on Makar Sankranti - the festival of kites, and the onset of Summer in India. Flush from the high of Christmas and the gradual resumption of life post-COVID, we racked our brains to think of something special for Dwayne who would be 10.

Dwayne actually made it for the 7 a.m. Mass at Holy Family church, Porvorim, Goa. (Of course, we had to offer it for him earlier.) Queenie made his favourite mutton biryani for lunch. In the evening he called a few of his friends over to cut the cake at 5. We sourced snack boxes from Baker's Street, CHOGM road. Porvorim which we handed out to the kids as they left. They tore down at 6, so as not to miss their play time - but not before they had blasted all (ok, most) of the balloons that were put up for decorations. Brightly coloured kites adorned the lampshades and the central chandelier of the hall. I recall that my dad had tied the kanni for the kite. Kanni is the way to tie the string to the kite to hoist it in the wind. By placing the kites, it felt that the celebration was more complete. After rosary and dinner Dwayne got to sleep on a Mickey Mouse bedsheet ordered specially for him and for which he had been waiting anxiously for. On my way back from work I stepped in to Champs, Panjim and picked up an FC Goa T shirt for him and a Nike bag which he had set his eyes on.
