Dvorak

Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Opus 95

‘New World’ symphony

Second movement: Largo

Composed: 1893

Duration: 12 mins. (approx.)

Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) was a composer from Bohemia. The Largo is perhaps his best-known work. It was composed in America where Dvorak was director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892-1895. He was hired to help America to find its own voice in music. At that time, Dvorak was music professor at the Prague Conservatory in Austria-Hungary. Dvorak said the soul of American music lay in ‘Negro melodies.’ It did not originate in European music but in African-American tunes. The four-movement symphony had elements of the old as well as the new world and so was widely appreciated.
