Edward Elgar was an English composer. The variations are a set of 15 short compositions. They are based on different people -- and a bulldog Dan, who fell into the river Wye. ‘Nimrod’ is the 9th variation. Elgar wrote it for his publisher August Jaeger of the music publishing firm ‘Novello and company’ - whom he fondly called ‘Nimrod.’

The variations remain a mystery
or enigma because Elgar did not reveal what theme he based them on. Some feel
he based it on the adagio of Mozart’s ‘Prague’ Symphony which shifts between G
minor and G major – like the Enigma’s theme. It is a stirring composition and
has been used extensively as a background score for patriotic occasions in the
United Kingdom – notably Churchill’s funeral, and the evacuation of British forces at Dunkirk in 1940. More at elgar.org
