Duration: 21: 07 minutes
1942
Third movement: Precipitato (Click)
Pianist: Yuja Wang
Germany 2017
---------------------------------------------------------
This is a war sonata – also known as ‘Stalingrad.’ It was inspired by the Battle of Stalingrad during World War II, between Nazi German and Soviet troops in and around Stalingrad on the river Volga in 1942-43.
Prokofiev’s 6th, 7th and 8th sonatas
are known as war sonatas. All were composed concurrently. Sonata number 7
depicts the desolation and anxiety of the war years, and Russia under the dictatorship
of Stalin. The themes are echoed in the dissonant sounds of the first movement;
the beguiling warmth of the second; and the pounding immediacy of the third.
The movements are:
I. Allegro inquieto (7.34 mins.)
II.
Andante
caloroso (6.32 mins)
III.
Precipitato
(3.18 mins.)
