Mendelssohn's composed three piano quartets. They were composed between 1822-1825.

They were the first of his works to be published. Piano Quartet No. 1 was composed in 1822

when he was13. It is scored for piano, violin, viola and cello. It was dedicated to the Polish

prince Anton Radziwill who was a cellist and composer, and a patron of musicians including

Beethoven and Chopin. The quartet was appreciated by Goethe.

Mendelssohn’s elder sister Fanny Mendelssohn was also an accomplished composer and

pianist though the spotlight has been on Felix. He was heartbroken when she passed on and

joined her six months later.
