Vivaldi is known for his Four Seasons – a set of four violin concertos - which he composed in Mantua between 1717-1721. Vivaldi composed over 500 concertos. His music is the epitome of Italian baroque. His sacred music is yet to be appreciated. This motet tells of Jesus as the only lasting peace in a world of chimeras.

The motet is in four parts:

i.                     Nulla in Mundo Pax Sincera (Aria) 6.43 mins

ii.                   Il Blando Colore Oculus Mundus Decipit / The world deceives our eyes with its charming colours (Recitative) 4.44 mins

iii.                 Spirat anguis inter flores / A snake breathes amongst the flowers (Aria)

iv.                 Alleluia 2.02 mins

Disillusioned by competition from younger composers, Vivaldi left Venice for Vienna hoping to find a patron – which he did not. Vivaldi died in poverty in Venice with no music at his funeral. The lines in Latin seem like his epitaph:

There is no unblemished peace in this world

Except in you sweet Jesus.
