Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was the second surviving son of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). He worked as harpsichordist for Frederick II of Prussia in Berlin from 1740 to 1767. He composed numerous works for baroque instruments like flute, harpsichord, viola, continuo and oboe. The featured flute concerto in B flat was composed for Frederick who was a flautist. It is divided into three movements, viz. i) Allegretto ii) Largo e mesto and iii) Allegro Moderato. CPE Bach was known as a teacher of music, a person who could play music extempore, and a composer. Although he was poised between the baroque and the classical periods of music, he developed his own style of music which was cerebral and unconventional.  His Essay on the True Art of Playing Keyboard Instruments (1753) was a standard reference manual. The entire concerto is around 22 minutes.

In the movie My Name is Bach, J.S. Bach is seen with his eldest son Friedrich and his second son Carl (featured today). It roughly covers the years 1734-1747 when all the three Bachs were composing in their different styles. Shot in Leipzig the movie is a rare and fascinating vignette of life - and intrigue - in the court of Frederick the Great of Prussia.
