About: Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) was an English composer. The Lark Ascending was inspired by English poet George Meredith's poem 'The Lark Ascending' written in 1881. Williams composed the work on the eve of the first world war. The violin resembles the Eurasian skylark (Alauda arvensis) as it soars upward 'In chirrup, whistle, slur and shake' over the serene English countryside.
