About: Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) was a French composer. In this concerto Saint-Saens dispenses with movements. Instead, he opts for 3 sections in one apparently seamless movement. The work was performed after the Franco-Prussian war (1870-1871) in order to prove that what the Germans did, the French could do better. The work was commissioned by the Societe Nationale de Musique - co-founded by Saint-Saens in 1871 - under its 'Ars Gallica' programme.
