Context
Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) was a German composer. Mendelssohn called this 'the wretched sonata' because he could not decide how to complete it. It was not completed even when he died. Yehudi Menuhin completed it in 1953. Mendelssohn wrote 3 violin sonatas over a period of 8 years. Only the second one was published in 1823 when he was 18. This violin sonata in F major is the third. Mendelssohn was 38 when he passed on.
