About: Beethoven (1770-1827) in this sonata, daringly departs from the traditional fast-slow-fast movement of the sonata form, and offers instead a slow-fast-very fast structure. The first movement with its repeated triad of notes is funereal and suggestive of Beethoven's awareness of his approaching deafness. The sonata was played by Beethoven himself at its premier where it is reported that some of the piano strings broke on account of the pounding on the keys in the final movement.
