Context
Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) was a Danish-German organist and composer. He was organist of St. Mary's church Lubeck, in Northern Germany - near the Baltic sea - in 1668. His fame spread in 1673 after organizing the Abendmusiken - concerts sponsored by the city's merchants to support the city's economy. J.S. Bach walked 400 kms. to hear him play. Handel came to meet him as well.
