Arsikere Junction

-Brian Mendonca

Rain-fall at Arsikere station
on a dank damp winter morn
A traveller leafs a newspaper
under the Hongemara tree.
Hot filter coffee
Dispenses itself from a hook
on an S2 window.
Change trains here for Tirupati
or Udhagamandalam.
2079 or 2780?
The Bangalore-Hubli Janshatabdi sweeps by.
A brisk walk on the platform
Tones up a somnolent thigh
A while more on the Tumkur trail.

Notes
Hongemara:A tree found in Karnataka whose seeds are used for biofuel; 2079: Bangalore-Hubli Janshatabdi; 2780: Nizamuddin-Vasco Goa Express

This poem was shared with Ambika Ananth and Mr Ananth, my gracious hosts and friends of poetry, at Kengeri, after I arrived from Goa at Yesvantpur station around midday. In the photograph above, they pose with a chandelier made of sea-shells from Goa.
